from 27 reviewsAn analog circuit with the advantages of Midi - ingenious. The pedal really does always sound great. No matter how the controls are set. Apart from the Mood control, I love the Mid control - really super musical and effective. My favorite setting is kind of a boost setting, with a bit of a clone like EQ curve, I guess. Fantastic piece of gear. I'm really excited about the new Fuzz coming out.
Since I bought my Kernom Ridge, it has already been so good to play, the sound is amazing, and the form factor and the construction are literally another level. The pedal is gorgeous not only the sound but the design also. And really important to mention that they hear us... The Kernom guys implemented the new way to save presets and this is amazing. Thanks for this gem guys!
I just returned from a three-day studio session with Austrian progressive rock band Traumwerk. I bought a Ridge at Guitar Summit in Mannheim a few weeks ago, it has not made it onto my main pedalboard yet but I took it to the studio just in case. I have some pretty decent drive pedals on my board (Xotic, T-Rex, Klon KTR) but in the end used Ridge on almost every song. I have not even explored the MIDI options yet and basically used it as a straightforward overdrive pedal, but it has proved to be a major force already.
Congratulations, you've created a very useful and powerful (and sexy looking...) tool for us.
When I decided to switch from digital drive-sound-shaping for analog ones, I knew I`ll need a master class pedal and RIDGE is doing the job better than I could expect, really. To have a full system you`ll need a MIDI controller, because there are more than 2 sounds you`ll fall in love. Maybe Kernom colleagues will propose soon extended version with a small screen and more program saving option, then I expect product will be complete. I cannot wait for MOHO to place it next to RIDGE on my pedalboard.
I keep my fingers crossed for KERNOM team, what next they can provide for us...
This pedal is outstanding, beautifully crafted and game changing, it’s just revolutionary
As a Worship musician it’s pretty hard to find the right Overdrive that pushes your guitar through the mix while also maintaining the integrity of your tone to keep things sounding silky smooth, I thank God I came across the KERNOM RIDGE!!!
The possibilities are limitless, you can go from clean boost, to edge of breakup to just straight up fuzz-like clippings with just the turn of the never before seen MOOD Knob on top of having the most complete EQ section I’ve ever used on an Overdrive pedal
I will be recommending this pedal to every musician that I come across and will keep the KERNOM RIDGE on my pedalboard for years to come
I discovered the existence of this pedal by chance on Youtube.
Having tried a multitude of Boost and Overdrive pedals, I was very curious to test the Ridge.
After watching the videos on Youtube, I decided to buy it.
Result, I love it!
So, I removed 2 pedals from my pedal board, my KokoBoost Relaoded and a replica of the Klon Centaur.
I'm keeping my Crunchy Chime Booster pedal for the time being until one day I've managed to simulate it with the Ridge.
Finally, I updated my Ridge to correct (improve) the management of MIDI presets.
Namely that this update is free and that I do not know of a company that offers a hardware update for free in the world.
Congratulations to this team and long life to this company.
I have been using the RIDGE for a while now and it is the only overdrive I use at this point. I have a pedalboard with every type of overdrive on it and I still reach for the ridge every chance I get. It does every sound I could want and it works PERFECTLY for my 8 and 9 string needs. Plus it works really well as a EQ for any clean sections I might have. I can’t say enough good things about it. I love it to death and if you’re even remotely on the fence about the pedal I hope that you give it a try because it’ll change you’re life.
In 30 seconds, I got the sound I had been looking for in years of trying a hundred overdrive pedals. And you can change it any way you want to make it sound perfect for your guitar and amp.
A bargain.
After taking all the reviews with a grain of salt, decided to give it a try for the "one drive to rule them all" on my board. And have to say it's all that...and more!
It now is absolutely the only drive I need. I combine it with a nice set of fuzzes and/or a blackstar dept 10 boost/buffer and I have to say the search has ended for me. It really is the most versatile drive I've ever had and the mood control really takes you through a LOT of drive characteristics and not just different sounds. Really just different drives instead of different colors to the same drive!
Combined with the midi capabilities it really is the only drive I need. That and a great customer service in case of questions makes this an absolute winner!
This pedal has all the drive I need. Using the basic voice and the pre-set you get two options, enough for a simple set.
I have been using the Hotone Ampero midi controller to get 4 settings for each patch which is more than enough.
All the sounds I have created have been tasteful and useable. It just does not make a bad sound.
I have begun to use an expression pedal. I have tried just using it as a means of moving from an always on drive to a overdriven lead sound and it works very well.
Next I am playing with using an always on drive and a full on maxed out overdrive with the mood at just on and nearly maxed out, all knobs moved to their limit. This seems to result in a stepped variation, but I have not finished trying out the options.
Now I am just looking forward the the Fuzz version. With the two together I bet all the options are covered.
Oh, and tried out with tube and transistor amps and it works with everything I have.
Merci Kernom !
The KERNOM RIDGE is an award winner, and for good reason; and the engineers just established a new precent that surely will be followed. When most guitarists are thinking what drive may be the best for certain sounds or applications, the Kernom people sought out a way to put nearly every drive pedal under one chassis. On that note, I’ll begin with the most important feature (although they all coordinate to establish specific OD characteristics), the MOOD dial.
MOOD establishing the clipping behavior of the pedal, of how it responds and interacts with the amp to give it a particular OD flavor, from soft to hard clipping, and from symmetrical to asymmetrical. There are five key sections from which to choose, and understand that each section has a ‘zone,’ which means within each section or zone, there are subtle and not-so-subtle differences (so do explore and do not simply place the dial in a section thinking it doesn’t matter). The first section is very clean and open sounding with no to little soft clipping – it really adds life and sparkle to an already existing tone. The second section is slightly more intense, with a transparent and highly dynamic overdrive. The third section is a colored overdrive, and is more pronounced still. Then we delve into the hi-gain section, which may sound as though it’s meant for hard rock or metal, but not necessarily (I’ll address that soon). The fifth section is heavy and thicker (woolier), with characteristics similar to (but not quite) that of a fuzz.
Now, the MOOD is only one component to all this, as the DRIVE knob then influences the extent to which the MOOD characteristics come through. As a simple example, you may like the qualities of the hi-gain section, but want to apply it to a clean signal for a moderate crunch. Well, if the DRIVE is low enough, it adds a low to moderate drive and may not sound hi-gain per se. In fact, nearly any OD pedal you can think of can be dialed into the KERNOM RIDGE because of this massive flexibility. There are several videos of musicians doing exactly that, and so, look into those for further clarification.
Once a basic OD sound is achieved, fine-tuning begins with the PRE TONE knob, which establishes how the pedal reacts to the guitar signal and before the clipping stage. Neutral position is 12-noon, whereas more ‘body’ is achieved by turning left, or more sparkle/presence if turned right. The POST TONE knob comes after the clipping stage and it allows you to customize the output sound, whether you want darker or brighter. Again, 12-noon is the neutral position. The MIDS shape the midrange frequencies, with 12-noon being the neutral position. This control better determines how the guitar signal sits in or cuts through the mix, for tones that are more scooped, darker, more cutting, etc. The VOLUME control does exactly that, and the KERNOM RIDGE does have a hefty amount of headroom under its hood, although requiring only a 9V input (300mA recommended). This is done by resetting the unit’s sensitivity (to maximize the signal to noise ratio) and to drive any amp imaginable. It is set automatically for guitar, but can be set for greater sensitivity if working with a keyboard or into a mixing desk. (I'll stop here, since I'm limited to 5000 words.) No complaints so far, and I can only imagine if they decide to do the same with distortion or fuzz (the latter of which they're working on).
First off, it is a big deal for me to buy a 'real' pedal because funds are limited. I have been buying affordable clone overdrives and have collected a ton. When I saw demos of the The Ridge, I wondered if it could both replace my pile of drives and also find new and inspiring sounds. That is a lot to ask of one pedal. But it totally delivered! It is way more than one tool... it is like being able to make tools! If the pedal alone is what you get, it is worth getting, but I am also so happy to get to know the company. BEFORE I bought the pedal, the guys answered all of my not-educated questions very thoroughly. Excellent customer service and a fantastic pedal. Win/win.
Feel free to check out my intro to the pedal on Youtube and ask any questions... if I can answer, I will. https://youtu.be/7bGuuVfcIZ4
